Assessments

At The LifeWise Centre we offer Cognitive Assessments for adults and children including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Learning Difficulties and IQ/Ability, conducted by our Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr Ellen Northcott or other suitably trained and accredited clinicians.

NDIS Plan holders who require a comprehensive psychological assessment, please contact us on 4932 0432.

The Process

A Standard Specialised Psychological Assessment consists of a number of appointments specifically set up to suit the needs of the person being assessed.

The initial appointment is to meet you and your child (if the child is being assessed) to obtain relevant background information. The appointment is for approximately one hour and includes questionnaires to be completed to capture background information on the person being assessed.

The second appointment is the assessment, this appointment can be between 2-3 hours depending on the needs of the person being assessed. This involves observations of the person being assessed and administering standardised psychological testing.

A second assessment appointment of approximately 2 hours may be required if all of the information we need is not able to be captured in the second appointment.

The final appointment is to give results of the assessment and a full written report of findings. We allow approximately one hour for this appointment.

Please note that appointments made for assessments are subject to change and we may ask for your assistance in the event that we need to reschedule the appointments.

For Child Assessments the following additional information is provided:

In some circumstances, where the initial assessment has revealed a significant symptom complexity, additional investigations may need to be conducted. These include, but are not limited to:

  • On-location observational assessment by Consultant Psychologist at your child’s preschool/daycare/school

  • Specialised interview/s with your child’s teachers/counsellors.

You will be advised during the specialised psychological assessment process if any of these additional assessments are required in order to obtain an accurate diagnostic outcome for your child.

If addition assessments are needed – additional dates will be organised by The LifeWise Centre for these investigations.

We ask that if at all possible, you arrange hearing and sight tests for your child before attending The LifeWise Centre for assessment, if these have not already been checked. This will serve to rule out any problems in those areas which might be major contributors to any difficulties your child is experiencing.

In order to help gain the maximum amount of information, we will ask you and your child’s teacher to complete some questionnaires regarding your child’s development/behaviour. These will be provided at the first appointment.

We look forward to meeting you and your child to look together at your child’s experiences and behaviours.

Post-assessment we can provide professional therapeutic work with your child’s behaviour or situation if you wish to follow up in that way.

Financial Assistance Available through Medicare:

Parents of children who are under the care of a Paediatrician are able to request a referral for a complex neurodevelopmental assessment undertaken by a psychologist, towards a formal diagnostic investigation by the Paediatrician. This referral will provide the family with access to a maximum of 8 rebates totalling $717.20 towards the costs of the psychological assessment.

After the assessment is complete the Paediatrician can also refer the child to allied health support services with access to additional Medicare rebates.
